Abstract

This paper presents some of the major program initiatives honoring Indigenous knowledge, culture, heritage, arts, and skills through curricular reforms and culturally appropriate educational practices on the Indian sub-continent. It presents case studies of Indigenous culture-based education, with reference to mother tongue and multicultural education practices and discusses their implications.

Author Biography

Navin Kumar Singh, Northern Arizona University

I have earned my doctoral degree in Curriculum and Instruction with specialization in Applied Linguistics at Northern Arizona University (NAU). I completed my Bachelors of Arts in English language and literature and my Master’s in Education with specialization in Linguistics from Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, Nepal. I earned my second Master’s in Teaching English as a Second Language from NAU in 2008. I have teaching and professional experiences of more than ten years. I served for Ministry of Education, Government of Nepal for ten years, before I came to the US to pursue my doctoral degree.

I have regularly published book chapters, articles, and book reviews on various themes, such as globalization, multicultural education, indigenous languages and communities, social justice and equity, cultural diversity, higher education, and language education in international journals both as a single and a co-author. I am also serving as a reviewer for many international journals, International Journal of Education Leadership Preparation, The Journal of School Leadership, eJournal of Education Policy, International Journal of Educational Development, AERA, TESOL and others.
